I'll be posting more soon after I get settled back in with my family, but here is a brief overview of our busy week...

*Met with many local artisans and interviewed and photographed them so I can share their stories. I'm continuously in awe of the Haitian people and their strength and resilience. I'm excited to be able to share more about them.

*Taught a photography class to
a fun and eager group.

*Worked with some women on jewelry and scarves
that we will have available for sale soon.

*Taught a paralyzed man from Cazale how to paint and was SO thrilled to watch his creativity bloom and see his amazing ideas of how to show the beauty of his country.

*When I wasn't busy with AFH things I was able to help pass out donated backpacks to kids in the community, play chemist a bit in the clinic, and care for an adorable 4 pound 6 month old baby who is struggling for his little life. Cazale is a place with so much poverty but also so much beauty, hope, and possibility.

*I wish everyone could see the love and dedication of the staff at RHFH and the insane amount of work they put into saving children in the Rescue Center and people in the medical clinic. They also do SO much to make life better for people in the mountains of Haiti. I honestly don't know how they do all that they do day after day. Amazing.

*I took a LOT of photos. Lauderdale airport, I'm in Cazale and SO happy to be back. Unpacked some of the our supplies and lots of backpacks that were donated to help school sponsorship kids in Cazale, played with kids for a long time this afternoon in the Rescue Center, and then went to a community development meeting in town to talk about a photography class I'll be teaching tomorrow and some art ideas for the future. It will be a busy, but very fun week. Hoping to squeeze in as much kid time as possible in between all the other excitement.

I was able to see some of the ladies I worked with to make bracelets with in April and it was a very joyous reunion. Nice to know they missed me as much as I've missed them. I'm so excited about some other things we'll be working on this week and some ideas we have for the future. How incredible to be able to earn a much needed income through art and creativity.

Trying to upload a few of the cute kids I saw today.
Many more to come.
Goodnight from Cazale.

Bobbi and Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02192137817918322988noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1921250194384968989.post-39039238371141002292010-09-02T11:58:00.000-07:002010-09-02T12:10:16.910-07:00Haiti Here I Come

This is where I will be posting at next week from Haiti.
I can't even wait to get to the beautiful kids in the Rescue Center and hug and kiss and hold them. I'll be too busy to do this a lot....but believe me, I will give up sleep to spend time with those kids. :)

The week will be spent working with the artisans in Cazale, spending time with the women we taught classes to in April and working on new ideas with them, and teaching a photography class to people who work in the Rescue Center and Clinic. I'm SO excited about the possibilities of the new art co-op in Cazale and what it could mean for people who are trying to provide for their families. We will also be exploring some other possibilities that currently are just dreams. Trying to dream BIG! :)

Your prayers for health, safety, and enormous amounts of energy so that everything can get done in a short amount of time are greatly appreciated!

Bobbi and Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02192137817918322988noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1921250194384968989.post-42370930622387610822010-06-19T15:41:00.001-07:002010-06-21T12:26:49.460-07:00I Need YOU
We have started accepting items from local artists in the Cazale area to sell in the States. We want to sell these items to broaden the market for these local artists so they can make enough to provide for themselves and their families. We will also be teaching some classes in the future to people in Cazale that need to learn a skill to earn an income. Our hope is that by providing more jobs in the area, there will be fewer starving children.

SO....here is why I need YOU to help. I'm hoping that you all can give some opinions on what items you like the most and what you would buy or what you think would sell in the U.S.
I will put numbers by the items, and if you can just leave a short post in the comments section about what you like/dislike or maybe even what you think could be different about the item so you would want to purchase it...we would appreciate it SO much!

We will be selling the items online in the future and through home sales (think tupperware sale, but you are helping feed kids and families!) and the items will be priced inexpensively, but fairly for the artisans to earn a living off of. Please leave any other questions or comments you might have as well. We are excited about the possibilities for these artists and for the families and children that will benefit from them! Thank you! :)

(*a few pictures didn't show up and I had to repost them. This caused a bit of disarray in the numbering, so I numbered the rope and little bird nests as the ones that didn't show up. Sorry it got so confusing.)

5. This Co-op has been a dream of ours since our first visit to Haiti, when we realized that lack of jobs is the main reason that so many children are starving. We're hoping that by providing an outlet for sales and by training people in need of jobs to learn a new artistic skill, that less children will go hungry and we will make a tiny dent in the problem that is poverty in the mountains of Haiti.

This blog has been used in the past to post about our time in Haiti (please scroll down to see the beautiful kids that are the reason we want to use art to make a difference), but now it will be the home to our new adventure. We are so excited to see this dream become reality!

Bobbi and Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02192137817918322988noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1921250194384968989.post-7438430444622153042009-12-14T20:01:00.000-08:002009-12-14T20:15:18.930-08:00Visiting Compassion

Our final day in Haiti we visited one of the Compassion International Projects in Port Au Prince. It was amazing to visit after having sponsored Compassion Children for almost 8 years. It was a place of joy, laughter, and hope. The kids had just finished their school day and were very interested to see the Blan (white people) that showed up. My favorite thing to learn was that they have extra-curricular activities on Saturdays, including guitar and art classes. We were able to purchase some paintings that the students had done and the money from the painting went back to the student who created it so they can purchase more art supplies. The kids were beautiful and I'm so happy we were able to experience Compassion.

Bobbi and Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02192137817918322988noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1921250194384968989.post-77521015693013494142009-12-11T12:51:00.000-08:002009-12-11T15:37:12.814-08:00Real Life
Our last night at the Rescue Center we met this family. It was a strange moment because I've read stories about families that are struggling just to put food in their bellies. I've read blogs about them. I've tried to imagine what it would be like to be in their situation.
I just haven't ever seen it in real life.

These cuties are Ronel (7 years old weighs 28.5 pounds), Marie-Lange (2.5 years old weighs 13.4 pounds) and Wideline (6 years old and wieghs 26 1/4 pound). Wideline was at the Rescue Center when we arrived and had been there about 2 weeks.

Mom and Dad look so solemn in this picture (still not sure why Haitians don't smile for pictures ;) ), but they were so smiley and friendly in real life. When we met the oldest child, we thought that she was a HE, only because of how she was dressed, but realized the next morning that we were wrong. That was a bit of a surprise. When Mom came up to talk to me I was able to communicate that I have 5 kids and that I thought her baby was so cute. Then I realized that she was visably pregnant. WOW- was all I could think. I can't even imagine how overwhelmed they must feel.
I've had 2 "unexpected" children and it totally threw us for a loop. I can't imagine struggling to find food and then knowing you will soon have another mouth to feed. Plus it's dangerous for the baby that is still nursing and still needs breast milk so badly. So many things to overcome.

Lori took Marie-Lange upstairs when they first arrived. It was so hard to see her frail little body standing there. Her older sister told Licia they hadn't eaten anything all day. This was about 8pm. Can you imagine?

Her legs are swollen from lack of protein. Everything seems different and strange when you return and the contrast between extreme poverty and the wealth we have here is almost too much to take. For some reason this morning was when it hit me that I'm back in the U.S. Busy rushing around and driving my girls to their beautiful school building in my nice heated car. It's just strange. It made me think of the school building we visited in Cazale. This is the room for the 4th graders. Kids squeeze as close as they can to fit on these benches and eagerly learn with huge hope for a bright future. I wish kids in America could see this classroom and the desire to learn in the Haitian children, so they could see how MUCH they have and be thankful for it. I know this is just a day to settle back in to my reality. The U.S. is not reality....just my reality. My head is reeling with so many things. The thing I know for sure is that I'm going to use the experiences I had in Haiti to do whatever I can to make sure those kids in Haiti have hope for their future. They have so much joy right now and I don't want to see that EVER go away.

I will be posting a lot more about our time in Haiti soon.
So much to share yet.

Bobbi and Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02192137817918322988noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1921250194384968989.post-238959695193690482009-12-04T16:47:00.000-08:002009-12-06T09:48:37.923-08:00We're Home

Just wanted to let everyone know we are home. I'm excited to be able to share more when I'm home, but for now at least you get photos. :)

We got to snuggle lots of kids today (the first pic is me holding the little guy with the really swollen legs and feet. He is just too cute to not hold. Can you believe he is six years old?) and we helped in the clinic again (got to experience some interesting and somewhat gory medical things again, and I actually enjoyed it!) and we got to play with the Cupcake Crayons and stickers we brought. Licia explained to the Nannies what they were. REALLY wish I spoke Creole. I'm determined to learn before we come back again.

Here are some pics and hopefully I'll get one more post in with more pics. Tomorrow is our last day. We all miss our families but it is going to be very hard to say goodbye to these guys.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Some people walk 8 hours or more to get here. Many sleep outside to save their spot in line. Last night we saw people making beds out of cardboard and garbage to sleep on outside the gate. Lots of people had babies and young children with them. I hope this would make anyone never complain about having to wait at the doctor's office or about our healthcare in general. I'm pretty sure NO ONE in America has ever walked 8 hours and then slept outside the doctor's office to make sure they could get help!

Everyone gets a number so they know when their appointment is and then the clinic nurses work all day long to make sure everyone is seen. I actually got to assist in some pretty interesting medical things today. I'll post more about that later.

Can't remember his name, but come on???? His has actually improved in the last 2 days, but his legs and feet are so swollen and his skin is starting to break down. He's sitting on my lap in this picture and he always wants one of us to hold him. He just melts into you and it's SO hard to put him down. He's about the size of a 2 year old, but his parents said he's six. His vocabulary is like a six year old, but he's so tiny it's hard to believe. I'm guessing the malnutrition has just stunted his growth that bad. When he's not in severe pain from the swelling (then he quietly wimpers and it breaks your heart) he has the biggest smile and wants to play SO bad. He's the little guy in the post before that was playing soccer. So stinkin' cute!

Deny, who's portrait we did for Artist For Hope, and some more cute kids.

This is Johnny. Not that I didn't think I would...but it's officially happening. The kids are amazing and as difficult as it is to see the ones who are so malnourished and suffering, this is a place of joy and you can feel it everywhere. I think EVERYONE should experience this. Yes, I mean everyone. You will be forever different.

We played with the parachute this afternoon which was really fun. The kids liked being underneath it mostly. Even Licia ran under with a little cutie who can't walk right now. Lots of smiles and giggles which was great. I have a lot more pictures, but I'm sure I'll be able to catch up more once I'm home.

We went for a walk outside the gates of the RC and Clinic through Cazale. Again, SO many pictures and things to write about....but here are just a few. A few of the kids from the RC rode along. The two on the right are in the process of being adopted and the little guy on the left just came to the RC. All are adorable and super sweet.

I love the toys and games the children have created. This was WAY up the mountain. WAY up. Scary up. But fun!

Came back to the Rescue Center after dark.

Filed files for the clinic.

Currently mashing and squishing packets of Medika Mamba so it can mixed up for the 30 kids that are on it.

Full, wonderful, and busy day. Haiti is a beautiful country, especially the mountains.

Hopefully I'll be able to post pictures tomorrow. Amazing to think that over a year ago a crazy idea that kept plaguing me would lead to a trip to the Real Hope For Haiti Rescue Center with 3 other women.

Artists For Hope was an idea that lead to a blog that lead to the first portrait that my amazing friend Alexis did of sweet little Deny. We wanted to help these hungry children in Haiti that we kept seeing on Licia's blog and our love for art seemed like a great way to start. It really doesn't seem like very long ago that we posted Deny's picture for sale, and now in five days...

....we will be meeting him in person and we will be able to give him one of the prints made of his portrait that started it all. Again, amazing.
I wonder what he will think? :)

We know we are in for quite a ride on this adventure. This isn't going to be easy. It isn't going to be all "fun". I'm sure it's going to be down-right difficult and horrible and awful to see children who are hungry and hurt, but we're ready and willing to do whatever we can to help and I hope we are able to do something to make their load a little lighter while we are there.

We're excited and grateful to have you (whoever you might be) experiencing this adventure with us. We would love to have your comments throughout our trip so we know people are out there and that you are thinking about us. I hope your passion for wanting to help the children in Haiti will grow right along with us as we get to meet these children in real life. Tell your friends and family about Artists For Hope and talk to those artists in your life so they know they can help a child through their artwork. What better reason to create.

Just so you know~ Our goals in Haiti are:
* to get lots and lots of pictures and video to share the Rescue Center and Artists For Hope with people around the world.
*to do some fun and simple art projects with some of the older and healthier children at the RC.
*to learn more about the RC and the children there and what we can do to continue to help them in the future.
*to do WHATEVER we can to help them throughout the week. Change diapers, hold babies, help in the clinic....whatever.
We are ready to work.

One of the things we did ahead of time were make Cupcake Crayons for the children. It's going to be so fun to draw pictures and see what the children create while we are there. You can read more about them on our Artists For Hope blog.

We will be posting from here whenever we can. If time allows and there is an internet connection~ we will post. I hope to share pictures and experiences nightly, but our main focus will be the children, so we'll see what time allows for.

Thanks to all of you for your excitement, support, and help in SO many ways as we've prepared for this trip. Our crates of supplies are FULL thanks to you. The money we are able to bring to the Rescue Center for medicine, formula, and their daily needs is thanks to you. I feel like we're bringing all of you with us and I hope you gain from this experience as much as we do.
Thank you!

Bobbi and Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02192137817918322988noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1921250194384968989.post-4844746184679931742009-11-11T14:21:00.001-08:002009-11-11T14:22:35.760-08:00I Can't Wait To See These Little Faces<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 299px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Fi9hEfh9OaM/Svs5JXC3ryI/AAAAAAAAFIA/-B12fFoZ1Xg/s400/jonny111.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402975010928701218" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 224px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Fi9hEfh9OaM/Svs5JDCDz_I/AAAAAAAAFH4/9aE21V-Kva4/s400/nov-8-2009-a-074.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402975005556592626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Fi9hEfh9OaM/Svs5I3AgIjI/AAAAAAAAFHw/voVCcjeAa0M/s400/nov-8-2009-a-075.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402975002328834610" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 175px; height: 299px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Fi9hEfh9OaM/Svs5IgpXMdI/AAAAAAAAFHo/uaz0whTs-Mo/s400/peterly112.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402974996326199762" />Bobbi and Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02192137817918322988noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1921250194384968989.post-29900287114524785442009-10-20T22:55:00.000-07:002009-10-20T22:56:57.496-07:00This is the placeThis is THE place where you can follow our trip to Haiti.
